How would you like to improve your squat by 50 lbs in the next few weeks?
My buddy, and professional powerlifter AJ Roberts (who squats 1,008 lbs!) stopped by the Gym Junkies training room this past week and we filmed an indepth instructional video that breaks down the squat from A-Z.
If you’ve squatted before, and have had some questions about your form, AJ has addressed them in this video. He addresses all of the common mistakes and tells you exactly how you can fix them.
BONUS: at the end AJ reveals 3 tips for adding up to 50 lbs onto your squat in the next few weeks…
If you watched the video take 2 minutes and let me know what you think in the comments below…
- Was this video helpful? (if not how can we make it more useful for you)
- We’re kicking around the idea of making an indepth instructional DVD with all of the major barbell lifts, would you be interested in this and if so what lifts would you like to see on it?
Let me know guys!
-Vic

Fantastic Video!!! This should be required watching by anyone thinking about getting under a bar and going heavy! AJ did a great job keeping it simple and yet extremely informative. He provided great coaching cues and points of emphisis. Great job and keep up the good work!
Loved it! All your videos are so clear. It answered questions I had about how to squat correctly. I don’t see anyone at my Y doing squats or deadlifts, so I’m figuring it out myself.
Newbie question: are the lower (knee level) pegs in the rack for a reason on the lift? Some kind of precaution? If so, how would it be used?
Your DVD idea sounds good. Why just barbell? How about including dumbbell and body weight movements as well?
How about showing AJ squat 1k pounds?
John, here is a vid of him on YouTube doing 1003…

very informational. I have weak abducters!!! Need to work on that.
Nice video. I would emphasize a few of the reasons why people may fail to have good form in this lift, not just show bad form. For instance, you make a reference to having weak abductors, but no ideas on how to address this condition. Also, overall lack of flexibility throughout the body can lead to incorrect form. Just wanted to emphasize that it is not just about performing an exercise with proper form, it’s having the physical capacity to perform the exercise properly to begin with.
Great job.
Totally agree with you Mark. This was one of the things we would like to address in the DVD. We didnt add it here because it would probably confuse a few people, but you’re right this would be very beneficial to a lot of people.
Nice video bro, AJ is the man!

Vic,
Thank you so much. A very well done, informative , helpful video! The information covered so much and will go a long way preventing injuries. Information was presented in a very easy to understand and to see way. Videos on all exercises and lifts would be very appreciated. Thanks so much!
Good instructional video. In just watching the squat instructional video I myself learned what I was doing wrong when I have heavy weights on the bar and I strat to descend and I get the shaky knee syndrom. I have to keep in my mind that I need to start with hips first and do not bend knees first.
Good video Vic, was nice to spend some more time going into detail on the squat and how to do it right, without injury.
Excellent video. Very good instructions and tips, clearly demonstrated.
Great video! Lots of very straightforward, helpful information for perfecting form throughout the movement – critical regardless of the number of plates on the bar. I like the instructions for taking the bar off and replacing after the set. I’d like to see AJ’s coaching tips on deadlifts and Good Mornings. Well done, indeed! Thanks!
Great description by AJ, the video is appreciated.
Vic,
Great video.
Wish I had that information years ago. Would have avoided few knee surgeries…
Do you also show the front squat?
Excellent info .
THanks!
Most detailed squat video on the net. Good stuff Vic.
I would only add a simple explanation of how to arch the lower back. For example – the superman exercise is the perfect way to explain the arch.
Freaking awesome. Big fan of AJ!!!
Unfortunately, I am unable to watch the last 5 minutes of the video. It just freezes. Any idea?
Good video nonetheless, enjoyed watching it so far!
Great video Vic. I thought I had good squat form but when you go in depth you’ll always find sometihng you can tweak or fix, as was the case with this video. If you guys did a video I would like to see some of the more technical lifts like cleans or snatches.
hey Vic ‘n Ashley
great great resource, very much appreciated. I’d like to see deadlift technical information … especially variations and what not discussed. thx and keep it up guys.
It’s an amazing video. We learnt a lot of things through it. There should be a same video about deadlift as well.
Thanks A lot Vic Magary
Very cool videos, but please change video hosting or player – vimeo just doesn’t work properly, at least on my Mac… cannot see the last 5 minutes…
@ Steve – Thanks for the heads up. Are you seeing this problem with all of our videos or just this one? Im on a mac as well, and weve never had any problems.
Very informative! Thank you for a great video! You’ve done it again.
Very Informative!! I learned several things
that I need to work on. Good Job!!!
Excellent instruction! Very nice job of breaking down all the technical aspects of this surprisingly technical lift.
Two suggestions:
1. More contrast between demonstrator’s clothes and background. With black top & bottom in front of a gray wall, it’s hard to see the subtle differences in spine position that are SO important. I also like to see different colored top & bottom with shirt tucked in, as this allows the best view of what the hips & spine are actually doing.
2. Could you address rounding of the lumbar spine at depth? Maybe not a concern for most people if stopping at parallel; but some will have their hips tuck under (ant. rotation of pelvis), forcing the lumbar spine to flex before they reach proper depth. If you know how to address this, it could be a nice addition to the video.
Once again, very well done, and very professional.
Great video! So detailed and precise. Vic you are practically training people for free! I like that you put a lot of thought while selecting a topic for your videos. They are all differant. You really know what people want.
thanks for posting this video! I myself am a devoted strength athlete and the Barbell Squat is the key lift I do in training. I Squat as often as I do cardio vascular training. which is every workout! it’s the king of all strength building excersizes! but only when done deep and properly! so long story short great video! and Aj is a darn good powerlifter that’s for sure!
Very informative video. I was unaware that my elbows should not wing out so far.
