From time to time, people will send me products to review.  I always appreciate the free samples and I now have a policy of not accepting product samples until after the person requesting the review receives the following disclaimer:

I assume by contacting me, you are familiar with my writing style.  I’m not above dropping the occasional four letter word and I’m brutally honest with my readers.  If I love your product, I’ll give it a glowing review.  If I don’t like it, I may be a bit “creative” in conveying that in my review.

And now that we’re all on the same page, let the reviews begin. . .

Able Planet NC300 Headphones – Great for travel, not for training.

Photo on 2010-05-26 at 12.37 #3

These headphones came complete with a cool protective case and an adapter for using them with airplane seats.  And the airplane adapter coveys a lot. . . these headphones are best for sitting, not for training.

The sound quality of these headphones cannot be denied – it was top notch.  And having an in-line volume control is definitely a plus.  But the “line” that ran from the headphones to my iPhone was too damned long.  How long?  I had my iPhone in the back pocket of my cargo shorts and the cord hung all the way to my calf.  When wearing the headphones while doing kettlebell swings, the cord kept getting caught under my arm.  Even with slow moving deadlifts, the cord was a distraction.  And for those of you still pounding the pavement with five mile runs, I can’t imagine using these headphones while jogging.

So if you’re looking for a good set of headphones to use while listening to music on your computer or enjoying the in-flight movie from New York to Los Angeles, be sure to check out the Able Planet NC300 Headphones.  But if you’re looking for headphones to keep the music cranked during your hard core workouts, be sure to find a set with a shorter cord.

Rokit Fuel – They had me at Wussie

IMG_0051

The folks at Rockit Fuel sent me two samples of their natural energy in a pouch.  But it’s the tagline on the product that made me eager to give it a try:

Not For Wussies: Wussie (noun) a person whose pursuit of excellence is eclipsed by a total lack of discipline and drive.

These guys at Rokit Fuel are obviously my type of people. . .

The product is a pouch of all natural ingredients that can be eaten as-is or by adding water (with water tasted better).  They sent me samples of the Pumpkin Chocolate and the Holy Pinole.  Both flavors tasted great and had ingredients that were truly “all natural” – not a single unpronounceable in either.  That being said, they both also contain several ingredients that I do not recommend for people trying to lose fat – namely oats, whole wheat, and corn.

But I’ll tell you when it would have been great to have a packet of Rokit Fuel – when I was doing 12 mile ruck marches in the Army.  And that’s who this product is perfect for, outdoor endurance athletes.  The product packaging even has pictures of a high altitude mountain climber and a triathlete emerging from the ocean.  So if you need some highly portable all natural fuel to keep you going on an outdoor event that will take you a few hours, Rokit Fuel gets my full endorsement.  But if you are like many GymJunkies readers and on a fat loss quest, steer clear of the grain-based ingredients for your fuel.

POM Pomegranate Juice – It’s Still Juice

IMG_0012

Does POM Pomegranate Juice have an antioxidant content that is higher than other juices?  Let’s assume for the sake of this review that it does.

That being said, I still wouldn’t drink this stuff in high quantities.  Like other fruit juices, if you are going to drink it I suggest cutting it with water.  Lots of water.  This stuff is so damned sweet, a full glass would produce an insulin response that would not be favorable to fat loss.

And speaking of an insulin response that would not be favorable to fat loss. . . Here is my favorite use that I found for the POM juice:

Fill tall glass with ice.
1 Part Bacardi Light Rum.
2 Parts Sprite.
Splash of POM juice.

Delicious!

And just to be clear, other than the actual samples I received, I receive no benefit from these reviews or the links in this post.  If you have a product you would like me to review, please send an email to vic@gymjunkies.com.

Great reviews! I work for Apple, so we get sample stuff all the time. I’ve heard just about every hi-end headphone out there.

As for POM and/or juice, I ONLY use it for my smoothies. It’s either juice, or honey (no more than a tablespoon). By itself, NEVER. The insulin spike is just too damaging to my day and body.

The oat bar looks good. I’d give it to my kids because they are active.

Again, great reviews!

Only lately have I been wearing headphones while working out. And to be honest, I haven’t found a set yet that I’m “crazy” about. There has to be a blue tooth set out there without a cord. . . probably a bit pricey though I’d guess.

That trail mix shit looks pretty interesting and I might check it out for my triathlon training. It looks like it might be a good boost after the swim to amp me up for the bike!
