They say music calms the savage beast.  Well it can also turn you into a savage beast with the right selection.  What is the right selection?  Ah yes, that is the beauty of music. . . Everyone’s tastes are uniquely their own.

Below are 7 songs that make me want to lift heavier, go faster, and crank my training volume to the next level.  What’s on your workout playlist?

1. “Name Of The Game”, The Crystal Method. I don’t care how many times I hear this song, it ALWAYS gets me going!  My number one go-to song if I feel the training vibe slump.

2.  “The Hand That Feeds”, Nine Inch Nails. I’ve been a NIN fan since Pretty Hate Machine.  Few can beat Trent Reznor for focusing anger and angst into music.

3. “Lose Yourself”, Eminem. I know, I know. . . Cliche to put this one on the list, but I can’t think of a better song to make you want to rise up when everyone else thinks you’re the underdog.

4.  “Counting Bodies Like Sheep”, A Perfect Circle. 31 Day Challenge Champ and overall BEAST Mike McNeill turned me on to this song.  This is the song I crank when it’s time to move the heavy shit.  Embedding was disabled, so if you want a listen click here.

5.  “Bring The Noise”, Public Enemy and Anthrax. One of the earliest Rap-Rock collaborations.  And one of the best.  Turn it up!

6. “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”, Smashing Pumpkins. If you’ve ever felt like a rat in a cage, this song is for you. It also makes me think of an old girlfriend (in the good sort of way). :)

Once again, embedding was disabled so click here to check it out.

7.  “Remember The Name”, Fort Minor. “This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill, 15 percent concentrated power of will. . .”  If you know the rest of that line, you know this song will get you fired up.  And if you don’t know the rest of that line, check it out:

What songs make you want to crank the volume and take your workout to the next level?

Let me know your favorites in the comments below.

I especially like #7 and have it on my playlist. I also listen to Hip Hop like Eminem’s Till I Collapse while I working out and anything that makes me feel like I wanna break things such as Drowning Pool’s Bodies and Disturbed’s Down with the Sickness.

Hell yeh. If you like Till I Collapse, look up Not Afraid by Eminem. The whole Disturbed album Indestructible is tight too.

Man, I LOVE the Ten album. But I always get stuck listening to “Black” on repeat; not the best song to workout to. . .

Bombs Over Baghdad- OutKast
Killing in the Name of… or… Bulls on Parade- Rage Against the Machine- Probably the only time I like listening to them these days.

Oh yes. . . Rage Against The Machine pretty much got me through the Army. “Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!” takes on a whole new meaning when you are government property. :) Thanks, Christie!

Any song by Rage against the machine does it for me. Deadlifting without RATM is instant failure for me, such beastly songs.

I’m more of a hip-hop kind of guy, so mine are geared towards the genre. But I love:
DMX – Ruff Ryders Anthem
DMX – Bring Your Whole Crew
50 Cent – Get Rich or Die Tryin (Yeah, the whole album)
Notorious B.I.G. – Warning
Outkast – B.O.B (Bombs over Baghdad)
Diplomats – Crunk Music
Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz – I don’t give a f***
Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz – Throw It Up
Killer Mike – F*** You Music
B.o.B – Champion
8ball and MJG – Armed Robbery
Ludacris – Move B****

Since I do very little running I like to have music that makes me want to start a fight so I can knock out the iron (or whatever bodyweight exercise I’m doing). If I’m running anything above a sprint though I always listen to marine corps cadences.

The DMX reminds me of being stationed in South Korea when I was in the Army. I swear every time Ruff Ryders Anthem came on in a bar there were 12 drunk soldiers in a brawl on the dance floor. Those were the days. . . :)

I won’t add my songs to the list, as it would be to embarrassing…..(yes, Fergie is on it…shut up!). But wanted to thank you for the post Vic, ’cause it reminds me of monster days…burpees, box jumps and tire flips. Haven’t found a workout to replace it yet! :)

Muse’s new album parallels whats going on right now in our world, so that is what’s driving me.

The “uprising” lyrics are so up-front and center, along with the resistance

I can’t believe there isn’t any System of a Down on that list. I could name like half their catalog for this purpose :)

Also I’m a big fan of Punk rock so let me suggest some Offspring, Pennywise, Anti-Flag, Circle Jerks and Bad Religion. Tough for me to suggest single songs because I love so much of their work and it always pumps me up!

If you want some more hard core metal, go for some Static X – “Push It”. Guaranteed to get you going!

The Prodigy – Breathe
The Cult – Love Removal Machine
R.E.M. – Superman
Crystle Method – Born too Slow
Boxcar Racer – I Feel So
Anberlin – The Feel Good Drag
30 Seconds to Mars – Kings and Queens

These are my go to songs, but the list could go on and on.

Thanks Vic for giving us something interesting to share with each other, even though our choices might cause us to blush a bit.

I hate when I’m working out and a song comes on my iPod that completely ruins my intensity. One of these days I will come up with a playlist that will keep me amped the entire time I’m in the gym.

Anything by the Dropkick Murphys or Flogging Molly usually keeps me focused.

Awesome post idea! I’m one of those types that can’t stand 99% of rap/hip hop crap, so I tend to lean towards lots of rock and some metal. The heavier and harder hitting, the better.

Nobody’s mentioned Metallica yet? “Master of Puppets”, “Battery”, “Damage Inc.”, “Through the Never”, “Fuel”, “Better Than You” (great motivation song for me), and dozens of others I could list out (almost the entirety of every one of their albums) if I haven’t already made a case.

“Street Fighter (War)” and “You’re Going Down” by Sick Puppies.

“I Don’t Wanna Stop” by Ozzy Osbourne. Zakk Wylde is amazing, shredding it up. The energy of this song always motivates me and pumps me up to force myself to work harder and better.

“I Stand Alone” and a bunch of other Godsmack songs

AC/DC, Disturbed, Guns N’ Roses (“Welcome to the Jungle”, anyone?)…Way too many to list.

A lot of my favorites have already been listed, but additionally:

Thunderstruck – ACDC

My Hero – Foo Fighters

Rear view Mirror – Pearl Jam (among other Pearl Jam)

Right Now – Van Halen (the intro gives me the chills)

The Rising – Bruce Springsteen (maybe just because I’m from NJ)

Also, Outkast’s B.O.B. is my go-to for finishing a run. It always helps me finish harder than I started.

2. Rammstein – Feuer Frei
3. Manowar – Call to the Arms
4. Metallica – For Whom The Bells Toll

There’s loads of stuff out that that keeps the intensity up!

Trivium – Down from the sky
Papa Roach – Change or Die, I almost told you that i loved you
Stemm – Face the pain
Rammstein – Links 234
GN’R – You could be mine

and so forth. Have to say that the order needs to be right though, which is a harder task than selecting the tunes sometimes

Anything with a killer crushing riff ;-)
